Wikipedia proved pretty useful when I went on a mad hunt for information on him....
It also has a lot of links to other sites in the bibliography.

It's a very interesting site, composed as if by the Joker...it gives you a really interesting twist on his mannerisms and gets into your head beacuse it's almost like you're getting into his head.

And for comics that should be read: "The killing Joke", "Mad love" of course the both most famous works. I guess you already know them.
I just read a comic book which Joke roriginal story I love the most. There he was already a very good thief, brilliant in outknocking security systems. But he weas bored cause everything went so well. Then a blond gilr in a bar talked to him as he was sitting there depressed. Teling him he has the duty to do his work one more time and he will love it again. He does so (yes the girl was Harleen Quinzel) and meets batman. From now on he really loves his job (he paid Harleens complete study bills for the tip ^^). Then everything goes looneytoon. His "smile" he get from batman (with one of these baterings) after that he fals in the Joker liquid. From now on ehe is insane like we love him. This was really the best one ever. But not very well drawn. And I don't know the name of it, in germany it was just a Batman special called "Joker" thats not helping *sigh*.
